Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA)
PESA is the simple surgical sperm retrieval procedure from the epididymis (a natural reservoir for sperm) that is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure involves a fine needle insertion into the epididymis to extract sperm from it. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is always used in conjunction with the PESA procedure.
Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)
Sperm may be extracted directly from the testes, when there is no sperm in the epididymis. This procedure is called Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) or Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE).
